Researchers at the Oregon Health and Science University have found that MitoQ, an antioxidant designed in the 1990s to reverse damage to human cells, may have treatment implications for multiple sclerosis (MS). According to the head researcher, Dr. P. H. Reddy, this antioxidant "enters neuronal mitochondria quickly, scavenges free radicals, reduces oxidative insults produced by elevated inflammation, and maintains or even boosts neuronal energy in affected cells".
In addition to being a breakthrough in MS research, this also affirms the idea that cellular rejuvenation starts with repair of the cell's mitochondria, or the organelle that produces energy for our cells. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has also been found to protect cells against mitochondrial dysfunction, as evidenced in this 2003 article from Neuroscience Journal.
